PROJECT DESCRIPTION from the architect.

When they moved to Seattle from Boston, Randy and Leslie sought an urban loft that was both hip and accessible. Unable to find what they were looking for, they decided to prove to the world (and the developers) that it is possible to create such a space, even on a limited budget.  This loft was designed to restore Randy’s ability to do activities that he loves, such as cooking for Leslie and for groups of fellow foodies.  Custom features create effortless living for homeowners and visitors alike, which is the hallmark of “universal design.”

Given the small footprint of the loft, the kitchen cabinetry was custom-built for maximum storage.  During the design process, accessibility consultant Karen Braitmayer, FAIA, of Studio Pacifica recorded Randy’s body measurements, including his reach range, lap height, and knee/toe lengths.  This information guided the design of the loft, particularly the placement of storage and appliances.  The end result is a space that suits both personality and lifestyle.
